The Norwich Society artists captured the life and look of the historic city of Norwich, with its narrow streets, gabled houses, courtyards, quiet charm and busy marketplace. They also captured the importance of its rivers as the main means of transport, with wherries continually loading and unloading at the mills and warehouses along its banks. Henry Ninham was a proficient painter of architectural subjects. His concern for accuracy, neat precision in execution and scrupulous interest in the buildings of Norwich gained him widespread praise. His paintings and drawings provide us with the most extensive evidence of nineteenth-century Norwich before photography came into use.
